This Pulitzer Prize-winning classic of the American stage is at once funny and horrific and thought by many to represent Sam Shepard at his finest. Mae is hiding out at an old motel in the Southwest. Eddie, her old flame and childhood friend, shows up and threatens to metaphorically and literally drag her back into the life from which she's fled. Their battle plays out as they trade barbs, heartbreak and painful revelations, taking themselves and audiences on an unforgettable journey that demonstrates what happens when love and attraction cross the line to obsession. Sean Murray directs.

Filled with dark humor, whisky and the wanton destruction of property, Sam Shepard's "True West" is a gritty character study that explores an encounter between two estranged brothers. Austin is a successful Hollywood screenwriter whose brother Lee is a violent, menacing drifter and small-time thief. Their separate lives come crashing together after a chance meeting at their mother's house. Lee forces himself onto one of Austin's writing projects and the two very different brothers gradually start to take on each other's roles. In what some consider Shepard's signature piece and masterwork, the two brothers battle for survival and their own salvation, but they might destroy each other (and their mom's house) before they find it.

With a tagline of "A true story of false profits," "ENRON" is a dynamic theatrical event about one of the most infamous scandals in financial history. Crafted as a sprawling tragedy mixed with savage comedy, the play follows a group of ambitious men and women through the breathtaking rush of greed and fraud that led to the energy company Enron's legendary financial collapse. Along the way we gain disturbing insight into the back-room secrets of big business, and confront a world where appearance has little relation to reality. Written by British playwright Lucy Prebble in 2010, "ENRON" was a sold-out sensation in London, where its plot received parallels with "King Lear". See it when it comes to San Diego's MOXIE Theatre this fall.

This fresh adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic novella "Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" takes the story of love, lust and depravity and gives it a shocking modern update. On the fog-bound streets of Victorian-era London, Henry Jekyll's experiments with exotic "powders and tinctures" have brought forth his other self -- Edward Hyde, a sensualist and villain free to commit the sins Jekyll is too civilized to comprehend. When Hyde meets a woman who stirs his interest, Jekyll fears for her life and decides to end his experiments. But Hyde has other ideas, and the two sides battle each other in a deadly game of cat-and-mouse to determine who will end up as master. This adaptation by Jeffrey Hatcher was nominated by the Mystery Writers of America for an Edgar Award for Best Play.

What happens when you take a classic commedia dell'arte from Molière, the French master of comedy, and give it an irreverent vaudeville-style update? "Scapin" happens! A madcap comedy by Bill Irwin and Mark O'Donnell that's loosely based on Molière's "Les Fourberies de Scapin" ("The Impostures of Scapin"), the play centers around fast-talking Scapin, a quick-thinking shyster who devises a cunning plan to help two pairs of lovers overcome their parents' objections. This fun-filled comedic romp pits servants against masters, sons against fathers, and even throws in romance, gypsies, slapstick and more.

Four moms with eight children among them certainly had material galore for their play "The MOMologues". This hilarious show, by Lisa Rafferty, Stefanie Cloutier and Sheila Eppolito, reveals with loving humor what all mothers know but don't always talk about regarding labor and delivery, caring for newborns, adjusting to a second child, disciplining toddlers, dealing with picky eaters, gender differences and much more. If you're a parent, you'll laugh out loud at the show's depiction of making a "simple" trip to the store, or the mind-numbing effect of reading the same book over ... and over ... and over in this lovingly sassy tribute to "the toughest job you'll ever love."
