Beachfront and Bayside Hotel Highlights
San Diego has a wide variety of beachfront and bayside hotels — from small, quaint inns with simple amenities to large resorts with a full package of amenities. Almost all of the hotels offer a good choice of room sizes to accommodate the number of guests, from one person to a large family or group.
The hotels in this section are more or less within a block of the beach or waterfront, with the exception of a few which overlook the ocean from a seacliff. A small number of hotels are actually on the beach, and even a smaller number have private beaches. Most beach hotels are either separated by a boardwalk and small cliff, or across the street, or within a block.
SAN DIEGO BEACH AND BAYSIDE HOTELS
Most beach towns have at least one beach hotel. Carlsbad, La Jolla and Pacific Beach have several beach hotels. Communities with hotels directly on the sand are Del Mar, La Jolla, Coronado and Imperial Beach. Of these, Coronado is the only town with a major resort on the beach.

Bayside hotels are typically resort-style, geared to vacation travelers. Downtown San Diego has resort-style hotels that cater to both the vacationer and business traveler. You'll find the large bayside hotel resorts in downtown, on Harbor Island, or on Coronado. Shelter Island has mid-size resort hotels, and Point Loma Harbor District has small to mid-size hotels. Several bayside hotels have private marinas. Only one hotel has a sandy beachfront — Kona Kai Resort Spa Marina on Shelter Island.

All six resorts along Mission Bay are on the water. Of these, all have watersports rental centers, four have private marinas, and four have sandy beaches. Two resorts are also within a couple of blocks of the ocean. If you're looking to vacation at a large paradise-style resort with a private, secluded beach, Mission Bay is your place, with the exception of Hotel del Coronado.

Since its debut in 1888, this beach resort is the last of California's grand old seaside hotels. Guests can stay at the Victorian Building, Ocean Towers & California Cabanas, or The Beach Village Cottages. Amenities include four restaurants, a large pool, an ocean view deck, and a wide, sandy beach.
