Air Show Highlights
Over the weekend, Wings Over Gillespie Air Show will showcase vintage military aircraft from WWII, including several designed built in San Diego. This all takes place at Gillespie Field in El Cajon, CA. Those which got their start in San Diego include the PBY Catalina, Vultee BT-13, Ryan PT-22, Ryan STM, and PB4Y-2 Privateer. Other WWII aircraft include F4F Wildcat, F6F Hellcat, C-53 “D-Day Doll”, P-63 King Cobra, F4U Corsair, F8F Bearcat, P-51D “Lady Alice,” and more.
Aircraft performances include John Collver’s War Dog T6/SNJ aerial display, Silver Wings Wingwalking, and Northrop N9M Flying Wing.
Numerous aircraft, Navy SEALs will be on ground display in addition to military re-enactors, paratroopers, and a mock battle with “Pyro.” Flying and mock battle performance days.
Friday, May 31, is a FREE youth Education Day with a focus on Aviation related Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. This “A-STEM” day is presented by Air Group One (AG-1). There will be no scheduled air show flying on Education Day.
The military air show is a once-a-year family event with a FREE Kid’s Zone and FREE PARKING. Amusements, rides, education displays, a variety of food and beverages, plus a Beer Garden that will add up to a great summer weekend for all. With the SR-52 extension that connects to SR-67, Gillespie Field is now more accessible than ever.
Wings Over Gillespie Air Show will relive San Diego’s contribution to aviation in WWII and what it was like during that era, when aircraft industries thrived, along with thousands of war pilots who trained here.
