Surf Dog Contest Highlights
Tthe annual “Loews Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog Competition” is expected to draw more than 60 canine competitors and thousands of spectators from across the U.S.
The surfing event will take place at the
beach and
Dunes Park.
Each dog has 10 minutes to catch his or her top two waves and was scored on confidence level, length of ride and overall ability to “grip it and rip it.” Winners scored the ultimate pet vacation at Loews Coronado Bay Resort… and endless bragging rights.
This popular competition is an extension of Loews Hotels’ award-winning Loews Loves Pets program and has become a hugely successful fundraiser for pet-related charities. This year’s event will benefit the San Diego Police Department Canine Unit through the San Diego Police Foundation.
Dog Surfing Schedule, Judging and Prizes
10 to 10:30 a.m.
Practice sessions by San Diego’s premier surfing school, Coronado Surfing Academy, for registered surf dog competitors.
11 a.m. Event Begins
Heat 1: Small Surf Dogs (40 pounds and under)
Heat 2: Large Surf Dogs (41 pounds and over)
Heat 3: Tandem Surfing
Heat 4: Ultimate Champion Round (first place winner
of Heats 1, 2 and 3)
Heat 5: Celebrity Dogs
1 or 2 p.m.

Judging Process:
Each dog/team has 10 minutes to catch their top two waves, and is scored on confidence level, length of ride and overall ability to “grip it and rip it.” The Coronado Surfing Academy can provide surf boards and assistance during the competition.
Prizes:
Ultimate Champion Round
New this year, the winner of the Ultimate Champion Round will become the 2012 “poster dog” for Loews Hotels! The star treatment includes a professional photo shoot and lunch. The featured photos will be showcased on Loews Hotels’ official website as well as the 2013 Loews Surf Dog Competition website, t-shirts and fliers!
Fees, Directions, and Parking
Competition Fees:
$50 for Divisions One or Two, $55 for Division Three. Fees also include a competition medal and a great goody bag filled with treats. All proceeds benefit the resort’s non-profit partner. General admission is free.
Directions:
From 5 North or South, exit Palm Avenue. The road will come to a split and you’ll have the option to veer to the left or the right. Stay to your left continuing on Palm Avenue toward the ocean.Turn Left on Seacoast Drive.
From Coronado or Loews Coronado Bay Resort, head south on the Silver Strand. Turn Right on Rainbow (it is the first light you’ll come to). Turn Right on Palm Avenue and continue west until you hit the ocean. Turn left on Seacoast Drive.
Parking:
Starting at 8 a.m., parking is available at the YMCA Camp Surf parking lot, which is located about four blocks from the event. There is a $10 cash-only charge; all proceeds will be donated. Limited spots are available. A complimentary shuttle from the lot to the beach will be offered from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
