Art Festival Highlights
Art in the Pines Spring Festival is a two-day art festival held over the first weekend in May, when the wildflowers are in full bloom. The event will take place at scenic Torrey Pines State Reserve, along the scenic mesa and bluffs, just north of La Jolla, CA. The art celebration will feature a Plein Air Competition and Artist Demonstrations. While there, be sure to visit the Torrey Pines Lodge and Visitors Center.
Plein Air Competition
During two months leading up to the art festival, 35 plein air artists will set up their easels and paint the beautiful landscape surroundings. Their art works will be on display and compete for prizes. Following the competition, the artworks will be available for sale.
Artists from the entire San Diego County region will display and sell their nature-based art for the benefit of the educational programs at the reserve.
The event will open promptly at 10am both days. No visitors will be allowed to shop before 10am.
At various times throughout each day, artists will be demonstrating and sharing their skill and knowledge. Many demonstrations will be taking place at the artist’s booth while others will be at beautiful sites such as the West Overlook, under the trees east of the Lodge, or just beyond overlooking the Penasquitos river valley. Please consult the schedule posted on the information towers for exact times and locations.
Returning by popular demand from from last year’s event are: Lucy’s Party Time Tacos and Espresso Urbano.
Torrey Pines State Reserve is a state park, located on a mesa, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Torrey Pines, after which the park is named, is very rare, only growing in the area between La Jolla and Del Mar, on Santa Rosa Island, near Santa Barbara and parts of Portugal.
The reserve has a network of hiking trails, which stretch from the Torrey Pines Visitors Lodge to the bluffs, overlooking Torrey Pines State Beach and the Pacific Ocean.
Buses, Parking, Shuttles, and Bicycles
parking will be available at the upper lot at Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve the days of the event.
All other visitor parking will be restricted to the South Beach or North Beach parking lots. Normal parking rates and restrictions apply to both lots.
The stop for North County Transit bus 101 is on North Torrey Pines Road close to the North Beach parking lot. From there it is a short walk into the parking lot where you can catch the shuttle to the event.
A shuttle will run from Torrey Pines State Reserve north and south parking lots. Day use fee of $10 or valid annual pass required for each vehicle entering the Reserve.
Shuttles begin taking visitors to the event at 9:30am both days. To board the shuttle prior to 9:30 will require your name be on the vendor, artist, or worker list.
NO visitors will be allowed into the Art In The Pines venue until 10am!
Shuttles are FREE to everyone. They may be boarded at either lot and will return you to either lot.
Bicycles are not allowed in the immediate vacinity of Art In The Pines, nor are they allowed on the park road grade between the Visitor Center and the South Beach lot. Bicycles may be walked up and down the grade but NOT ridden.
Bicycles may only be ridden to the event on approach from the south along the park road between the golf course and the restrooms. Bicycle parking will be available at that location.
A Weekend Escape
Art in the Pines Spring Festival promises to be an exciting and informative event for the whole family. It is a marvoulous time of the year to hike along Torrey Pine State Reserve’s many trails, take in the fresh air, the Pacific Ocean, hills and scenic meadows. It will also be a chance to learn how Plein Air artists paint landscapes and bring home an original of their work.
