Carlsbad Village Theatre
It’s not many venues which can host a stand-up comic with a Ph.D. in biology one night, then follow it up with a major Jehovah’s Witness ceremony the next. But for nearly a century, that’s been the daily order of business at Carlsbad Village Theatre, which is home to a wide variety of live entertainment, cinematic performance, and corporate and group events in coastal North County, San Diego.
Built in 1927, the theatre’s unassuming, Spanish-styled, white exterior stands in stark contrast to the lush hues of red draping its inner auditorium. In its early days, the Theatre’s stage showcased the lightly comic antics of Vaudeville, while its screen played the black and white classics of film’s silent era.
Today, that same space plays host to a rotating cavalcade of concerts, stand-up and sketch comedians, benefit shows, theatrical plays, and dance troupes. Consider checking out The West Coast Funnies with Kurt Swann, a monthly-recurring comedy variety show satirizing current events, politics, and pop-culture running for over eight seasons.
Major renovations were made to the Theatre’s seats, decor, stage, screen, and lighting and sound systems in 2000. With regular upgrades made each year, today the auditorium comfortably hosts 300 guests with raised, theater-style seating and modern amenities, including a snack bar in the lobby serving up the basics.
And while the Carlsbad Village Theatre is a ‘dry’ establishment, its no-alcohol policy offers a refreshing alternative to the usual ‘two-drink minimum’ comedy and entertainment clubs found elsewhere.
The theatre’s location makes it a great choice for group outings, families, or dates. Round off your evening with a leisurely stroll to one of Carlsbad Village's many restaurants, coffee houses, pubs, or shops nearby. Or skip all that and cut straight to a walk on the beach - you’re just a stone’s throw away from the Pacific.
Carlsbad Village Theatre and its staff are also available for private rental for a multitude of events, including fundraisers, group meetings, pageants, holiday services, and corporate and educational seminars.
Minutes away from I-5, the Theatre is located right across the street from the Coaster Train Station, which offers free public parking after 6 p.m. on weeknights, as well as all day on weekends.
