Park Highlights
The Torrey Pines ladened reserve is located on the north side of La Jolla, atop scenic coastal bluffs.
The state park is named after the rare Torrey Pine tree, which only grows in the area between Del Mar and La Jolla, as well as Santa Rosa Island, near Santa Barbara.
Torrey Pines State Reserve has several hiking trails from the Torrey Pines Visitors Lodge to the bluffs overlooking the ocean. Some trails are longer than others, and one trail goes down to Torrey Pines State Beach.
The park has many types of plants and animals, native to the arid region. And because much of the scrub is low lying, you can see for long distances in the park, giving everything an expansive feeling.
Torrey Pines State Reserve is popular with school-age children. During the school year, school kids from all over the county and beyond are taken on special tours of the park by docents, who are knowledgeable of the reserve.
Docent led hikes are also available for the general public. Check the Torrey Pines Reserve website for more information.
Food is not available at Torrey Pines State Reserve and picnicking and camping are prohibited. Best to bring a snack or eat in your car.
Torrey Pines State Reserve prohibits dogs anywhere inside the reserve or on the beach, even within a vehicle.
Visitors Lodge Nature Center
A historic lodge serves as a the Torrey Pines Visitor Center. There, you can find information about the Torrey Pines State Reserve and Los Penasquitos Lagoon. A usable accessible route leads around the side of the building to the north door. Some assistance may be required with slopes or entry thresholds.
The Visitor Center exhibits are generally accessible. A video room is generally accessible, but some assistance may be needed at the narrow entry. One captioned video is available, and another is coming. A script is available upon request for the slide show.
Parking: There are two designated accessible spaces in both the east and west lots of Torrey Pines State Reserve. The east lot is located adjacent to the Lodge, and the west is across the road from the Lodge.
