University of California San Diego, operates SIO and has a graduate level campus with degree programs
at the institute.
Scripps Institution of Oceanography has conducted oceanographic research and exploration around the world for over a century. Many of these trips can be frought with danger, faced with treacherous seas and ambitious schedules. Its not uncommon for researchers to spend months and years going over data and specimens collected from a single voyage.
A famous landmark of the research institute is Scripps Pier, which can easily be seen from La Jolla and Torrey Pines. The pier has no doubt inspired many kids with a desire to become oceanographers when they grow up. The pier is a private research pier and closed to the public. Occasionally, SIO conducts public tours.
In addition, you can relive research expeditions on their website.
