New Nature Center
The new San Elijo Lagoon Nature Center, a long-awaited dream for the public's use and enjoyment, is now open. The nature center stands beside the trailhead and
San Elijo Lagoon in a quite, retreat like setting.
The facility is owned by the County of San Diego and is operated by the County of San Diego Parks and Recreation Department.
Green Technology
The new, 4-230-square-foot, two-story lagoon nature center promotes the latest in green construction, in which natural and recycled materials are used to reduce energy consumption and the impact to the environment.
The center features a green roof, with plants in soil directly on a part of the roof. The roof also has cool roofing technology designed to prevent heat from accumulating.
Amenities
The second floor can be reached via stairway or elevator from outside the building. Walk out onto the outside deck of the second floor, and enjoy a panoramic view of the lagoon, trials, and surroundings. Eating tables are available on the deck to enjoy a nice meal or snack (which you'll have to bring).
The new San Elijo Lagoon Nature Center offers expanded space for hands-on displays and interactive exhibits that clearly explain the lagoon's history and its importance to the natural environment. The center will be a learning session for the region's children.
