You know you’ve reached LEGOLAND in Carlsbad, CA (San Diego County) when you see Bronte, the nine-foot-tall bright red dinosaur made entirely out of LEGOs greeting you from the entrance.

LEGOLAND is broken up into nine major sections: The Beginning, Dino Island, DUPLO Village, Fun Town, Pirate Shores, Castle Hill, Land of Adventure, Imagination Zone, and Miniland USA. Each section of the park includes a unique theme that applies to its rides and LEGO figurines.

The Beginning

The Beginning includes a large LEGO and souvenir shop called “The Big Shop”. It is the largest shop in the park and contains a wide selection of LEGO kits and toys as well as LEGOLAND t-shirts, key chains, mugs and other takeaways.

The Beginning area also provides helpful resources for families including ATM locations, a first aid station, guest services, locker rentals, lost and found, a lost child station, membership booth, and stroller and wheelchair rentals.

Dino Island

The theme of Dino Island is, you guessed it, dinosaurs. The LEGO wizards of LEGOLAND have gone all out on Dino Island. Visitors are greeted by a 1,000 pound Brachiosaurus and 10-foot-tall Parasaurolophus figurine, each made entirely from LEGOs.

The main ride of Dino Island is the “Coastersaurus”, which can speed up to 21mph and takes riders through a jungle of animated LEGO dinosaurs. Other attractions in Dino Island include “Dig Those Dinos” a large sand pit where children can dig for dinosaur bones, and the Dino Dig Store.

DUPLO Village

DUPLO Village appeals to younger children and includes a variety of different play areas.

DUPLO Playtown lets younger children have fun in a LEGO town that includes buildings, slides, a fire station and police station. After DUPLO Playtown, families can float down Fairy Tale Brook where they can see popular fairytale scenes recreated with LEGOs.

DUPLO Village also includes an exciting safari ride where children ride in animal-print jeeps and observe life-size LEGO safari animals, including gorillas, giraffes, elephants and crocodiles.

Also in DUPLO Village, the playtown theater provides an interactive and fun musical adventure that small children will enjoy.

Fun Town

Fun Town is a mishmash of different LEGO landscapes, rides and activities for children and their parents. Adventures Club is a walkthrough portion of Fun Town which includes scenes of the Amazon rain forest, ancient Egypt and the Artic, all constructed from LEGOs.

Rides in Fun Town include Flight Squadron, an airplane ride for young children; Police and Fire Academy where families race fire trucks and police cars; Power Towers, two tall towers that pull riders up to the top and then drop them down; Skipper School, a boat ride where riders can see LEGO-built scenes along the way; Sky Patrol, a fun up and down ride; and Sky Cruiser, one of the most popular and whacky rides in the park.

Other features of Fun Town include the LEGO Club House where visitors can play a LEGO MMOG video game with other players around the world; a LEGO factory tour where visitors can learn how LEGOs are made and packaged; and Fun Town Stage where kids learn about fire safety.

Pirate Shores

This pirate-themed area includes water rides and many pirate figurines made entirely out of LEGOs.

Captain Cranky’s Challenge is a fun ride where visitors pile into a boat that sways back and forth along a U-shaped track. The Soak-N-Sail is a water playground where children can climb around and play with over 60 different water-spouting gadgets. Prepare to get very wet.

Two other popular rides in Pirate Shores are Splash Battle and Treasure Falls. On the Splash Battle ride, families pile into a boat and use water cannons to navigate through pirate-infested waters. Treasure Falls is a mini-water flume ride with a 12 foot drop and views of LEGO pirate scenes.

Castle Hill

Castle Hill was built right out of a storybook and includes witches and dragons and knights in shining armor, all made out of LEGOs of course.

Start on the Enchanted Walk and see if you can catch sight of all the impressive LEGO figurines along the way. Next, it’s time to enjoy some rides. The Knight’s Tournament swings riders through a fun quest that includes a huge, scary LEGO dragon. On the Royal Joust, young riders mount their own LEGO horse and are whisked away through an enchanted forest filled with LEGO figurines. There’s also the Dragon coaster, where riders will feel their stomachs jump on twists and turns.

Castle Hill also includes the King’s Treasury, an area where children can pan for treasure and the Wild Wood’s Golf Course, an 18-hole miniature golf course that features 40 different LEGO figurines developed around fun and challenging holes.

Land of Adventure

Land of Adventure is based on 1920s Egypt and includes rides, LEGO figurines and features with a distinctly Egyptian flair.

Some of the popular rides in Land of Adventure include the Beetle Bounce, a ride that propels groups of four up a 15-foot-tower and then lets them drop; Cargo Ace, a plane ride where young children and parents can soar up to six feet in the air; Dune Raiders, a fun 30-foot-slide with a pair of double-helix corkscrews; Lost Kingdom Adventure where families can rack up points by hitting targets with laser guns; and Pharaoh’s Revenge where riders fire foam balls at targets and other riders.

Imagination Zone

Imagination Zone includes great rides, and lots of LEGO-enhanced entertainment.

Some of the most popular rides in Imagination Zone include AQUAZONE Wave Racer, where riders buzz through waves and water blasts on a jet ski vehicle; BIONICLE Blaster, where families turn a wheel at the center of their carriage to make it spin faster and faster; and the LEGO TECHNIC Coaster where riders race a life-size LEGO TECHNIC vehicle along a twisting coaster track.

Imagination Zone also includes entertaining features that will keep kids excited and teach them about LEGO culture. In the Build and Test room, children can build a LEGO car and race it against other cars. The LEGO Hero Factory features the next generation LEGO story where LEGO heroes are built and equipped based on specific missions. Lastly, the Xbox Family Game Space is filled with Xbox games that family members young and old will enjoy playing.

Miniland USA

The Miniland area of LEGOLAND is an incredible place that features 1:20 scale LEGO models of some of the USA’s most well-known and beloved cities, including Las Vegas, New England Harbor, New Orleans, New York, San Francisco, Washington D.C. and Southern California.

The Block of Fame, where visitors can see classic works of art, famous American historical figures and pop icons made of LEGOs.

Parents are sure to get a kick out of the LEGO STAR WARS area, which recreates some of the most pivotal scenes of the STAR WARS franchise as well as life-sized models of its most beloved characters, including Chewbacca, R2-D2 and Darth Vader.

Overall, LEGOLAND is an incredible adventure, filled with amazing rides and incredible LEGO figurines and scenes. It’s mind-boggling to see how LEGOs can be used to create such a wide array of models. Both kids and parents are guaranteed to have a good time.
