Downtown Highlights
San Diego Avenue is Old Town's main commercial drag, featuring several restaurants, shops, concessions, and historical sites. Several blocks long, the thoroughfaire comes alive during such festivities as
Cinco de Mayo,
July 4th, and
Taste of Old Town.
Parking can be tight on weekends and holidays.
There is a large parking lot located east of San Diego Ave, between Harney and Twigg Streets (
map).
At the north end of San Diego Avenue is Old Town State Historic Park, which recreates the setting of California life between 1821 to 1872, when San Diego evolved from a Mexican pueblo into an American frontier town.
